The D.Sc/ D.Litt. degree is awarded for published work of an exceptional standard, containing original contributions to the advancement of knowledge and learning which has given the candidate international distinction in their field. Candidates must be able to demonstrate a sustained contribution to their subject, as evidenced by seminal publications.

The DSc/D.Litt is of a higher standing than the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and is awarded for work that makes an original, substantial and distinguished contribution to knowledge in a field with which the faculty is concerned. Work submitted for the degree normally comprises publications that have appeared in the forms of books or papers in scholarly journals that are then presented in the form of a thesis. The degree will give the applicant authoritative standing in that field and the right to general recognition of this standing by scholars in the field.

Eligibility

  • The Degree shall be awarded to those candidates whose submitted works provide evidence of an original contribution of special excellence to linguistic, literary, philosophical, social, cultural or historical / scientific knowledge such that they are considered to have authoritative standing and international eminence in their field.
  • The Degree shall be awarded for work, whether sole or conjoint, published in book form or in scholarly journals in general circulation. In addition to the published work, the candidate may submit unpublished work in support of the application.
  • A candidate for the Degree of Doctor of Literature / Science must be a holder of Ph.D. degree.
  • No application to be examined for a higher doctorate will be considered until at least eight years after graduation to the candidate's first degree.
  • No work shall be considered for the Degree if the work, or a major portion thereof, has previously formed the basis of an award of any degree or diploma in this or any other university.
  • Work submitted on a previous occasion for consideration of a higher doctorate will not be reconsidered for the Degree unless more than five years have elapsed since the previous submission and the resubmission includes new material. Application
  • Consideration of applications and examination shall be carried out in accordance with the Procedure for the Examination of Higher Doctorates, as determined by the Board of Graduate Studies from time to time.
